Commercial Wet & Dry Vacuum Cleaners Buyers Guide 2019

The Best Commercial Wet & Dry Vacuum Cleaners Buyers Guide in 2019

Heavy-duty Industrial vacuums are essential for tackling dirt and dust from challenging environments such as building sites, offices, workshops or stores. The engineering inside commercial vacuums resembles that of domestic machines but they are some fundamental differences, they are larger, more powerful, made from stronger materials and can also handle wet liquids.

If you’re a building professional or workman, a wet and dry vacuum cleaner is vital for your workshop or building project. A standard vacuum is not robust enough to cope with the challenges that a commercial cleaner can take on- it can clean both indoors and outdoors, some can be transform from vacuum to blowers, use them for water recovery and unblocking sinks.

There are several manufactures of commercial vacuums but the most common ones are designed by brands such as Vacmaster, ProTeam, Powr-Flite, Kärcher, etc. We’ve shortlisted the highest performing wet and dry vacuums for commercial use. Simply use the link below to access our recommendations. It’s important to use the correct appliance for your business and requirements, therefore, we’ll cover more of this further down.

What’s The Difference between a Commercial Grade and Regular Vacuum Cleaner?

Domestic vacuum cleaners are great for regular household usage, however, a commercial vacuum is designed for heavy-duty work, houses a motor with more power, uses higher quality filters, can extract liquids and is built for continuous cleaning over extended periods. If you were to place the same demands on a standard vacuum it would soon break down. Industrial cleaners are made for demanding environments.

Additionally, the majority of commercial vacuums are equipped with a high grade, longer power cable to improve the operational safety standards for your business.

Vacuum Cleaners In Action

The basic principle of a vacuum cleaner is that it operates using a motorised fan to draw dirt and air inside the unit, then catches dirt using various filters as the air passes through the machine. This is a fairly standard process, however, not all vacuum cleaners are created equal and the suitability of a vacuum will very much depend on several factors-

Suction power

The level of suction power required for commercial cleaning depends on the type of dirt that needs cleaning. Smaller grains of dust are extracted efficiently with higher airflow instead of suction, however, larger dirt particles are cleaned better with increased suction power.

As a rule of thumb, machines with a larger amount of wattage in their motors deliver higher suction power. Commercial vacuum cleaners have at least 5 to 10 amps of power and as a result, can perform the toughest tasks and collect liquids quickly. The machine’s effectiveness will also depend on the build quality, adaptability and filter maintenance. Choose wisely!

Dry Debris, Liquids or Both?

Industrial vacuums can handle tough mess such as wood chippings, sawdust and debris caused by drilling, however, if you require a machine to collect liquids you will need a wet and dry vacuum. These units are specially adapted to collect wet substances whilst protecting the electrical components and motor.

Our recommended wet dry vacuums can switch from dry cleaning to wet with minimal fuss. This provides you with the ultimate convenience for various cleaning jobs without the need for multiple machines.

Cleaning Speed

The rate at which a vacuum cleaner sucks air is calculated using the average air speed multiplied by the width of the hose, therefore, a slimmer suction hose will result in lower air volume but the advantage of this is higher vacuum power. Airflow is calculated by the amount of air litres an appliance can move per minute. Commercial vacuums are capable of moving thousands of air litres each minute.

If you’ve read some of my previous posts you’ll already know that I write extensively about filters because they are a huge contributing factor to vacuum cleaner performance. Filters come in all shapes, sizes and grades. The type of filter we’ll look at today is a HEPA filter which, in my opinion, is a standard requirement for industrial vacuum cleaners.

What is a HEPA filter and how does it work?

It provides the highest level of filtration and stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. These filters are vetted and given the seal of approval only if they meet the requirements to extract a large percentage of microscopic particles from the air.

HEPA filters are used in various types of machinery and industries such as motor vehicles, however, installing HEPA filters in vacuum cleaners has big benefits. This level of filtration cleans the air and captures dust, pollen, airborne allergens making it ideal for asthma and hay fever sufferers.

All vacuum cleaners are equipped with filters, however, this doesn’t mean that they are HEPA filters. I would highly recommend that you buy a commercial vacuum cleaner with HEPA filtration to catch minute dust particles and separate it the air more effectively than a standard filter.

Is it Worth Buying a Wet & Dry Vacuum?

In addition to commercial cleaning, wet and dry vacuums can also be used regularly for domestic cleaning throughout your home. The majority of wet and dry vacuums are fitted with long power cables and usually come with an assortment of accessories to carry out plenty of tasks including cleaning upholstery, offices, car interiors and garages. Below is a summary of the different ways you can use a wet and dry vacuum cleaner-

  • Vacuuming debris after an extensive house renovation.
  • Blowing away leaves, grit and dust from the porch or paving (with the blower feature).
  • Cleaning wooden floors, drapes and mattresses.
  • Collecting water, from hard floors, carpets, caused by leaks or spillages.
  • You can also unblock a blocked sink.
  • Cleaning vast areas such as store floors or offices.
  • Vacuuming sawdust, wood chippings and grit.
  • Power tools can be attached to some models for automatic cleaning whilst you use your tools.

Cordless Commercial Vacuum Cleaners

Nowadays, portable handheld vacuum cleaners are a common household appliance and are convenient for cleaning cars interiors and areas with limited power sockets.

Advancements in battery technology have resulted in extending cordless convenience to commercial vacuum cleaners, with lengthy battery times and similar performance to their corded counterparts. Cordless Commercial vacuum cleaners are a godsend for areas where lose cables could be a risk or to clean areas that don’t have an electric source.

Commercial Vacuum Cleaner Capacity

The capacity and size of a commercial vacuum cleaner will ultimately determine how much dirt you can clean in one go and also the ease of handling the machine. If you anticipate that you’ll be cleaning large spaces and a high amount of dirt regularly then you might want to choose a unit with a bigger capacity. A portable commercial wet & dry vacuum with less capacity should be sufficient for smaller areas.

  • Large Capacity- ideal for robust commercial wet and dry tasks. This is the top end of machine capacity and usually contains the most powerful motor, however, these appliances will weigh more and tend to be cumbersome.
  • Medium Capacity– a portable machine that doesn’t compromise cleaning performance but will need emptying more frequently than larger models.
  • Small Capacity– perfect for carrying between floors, easier for storage, however, it’s not as powerful as larger units.

It’s worth considering the amount of dirt you’ll be vacuuming and the frequency you’ll be emptying the machine as full tanks can lead to lower suction performance. Commercial vacuum cleaner tanks are usually made from strong materials such as stainless steel, which is extremely durable. If your machine needs to be used to collect harsh chemicals then you are better off with a Polypropylene tank.

Vacuum Cleaner Hoses

Vacuum cleaner hoses come in different sizes. If you need to clean larger dirt particles on a regular basis, I’d recommend a 2.5 metre hose at the very minimum. For smaller particles a hose size between 1.25 – 1.5 metres would be sufficient and for everything else in between a 1.5 to 2.5 metre hose would be adequate.

Machine Noise Level

Most modern commercial vacuums are equipped with noise diffusers and as a result, will operate at a lower noise level while still providing the high performance required for industrial cleaning. Most of our recommended vacuums have a comfortable sound level less than 80dB. Lower motor noise is highly beneficial especially in areas such as offices or stores where employees might still be working and require minimum disruption.

Vacuums for combustible or harmful dust

It is also possible to buy an industrial safety vacuum to carefully remove combustible and harmful particles such as asbestos. These units often use a higher level of professional filtration and twin motors for the most robust tasks.

Attachments and Accessories

There is no such thing as a vacuum cleaner with too many accessories. It’s always a good idea to buy a machine with a good range of attachments, therefore, allowing you to perform virtually any task with relative ease. Commercial wet and dry vacuums are machines that are put through their paces. They need to keep up with a multitude of demanding tasks in different environments. Their ability to clean both dry debris and wet substances means that they need more tools than regular vacuums.

ProTeam-ProGuard-16 MD-16-Gallon-Commercial-Wet-Dry-Vacuum-Cleaner

Below is a list of attachments and accessories to look out for:

  • Crevice tool– made for tight gaps and smaller spaces in awkward areas such as workshops and garages.
  • Extension wand– used for better reach and to clean beneath furniture. If your new machine comes with a leaf blowing function, you might also get a separate wand for that.
  • Dusting tool– a special brush with softer bristles for gentle cleaning of delicate areas.
  • Upholstery tool– used to clean dirt and dust from furniture. This is a must-have for a house/ office cleaning business.
  • Specialised floor-cleaning attachments– designed for either hard floors or carpets or a multi-purpose tool for both.
  • Squeegee floor tool– some brands provide an accessory that can be front-mounted to the unit to collect liquids easier than using a hose and wand.

Affordability of a Commercial Wet & Dry Vacuum Cleaner

Commercial cleaning is tough work which is why it makes sense to buy the best possible unit to save you time and effort. The cost of industrial wet and dry vacuum cleaners varies between brands.

Factors like build quality, motor wattage, capacity and filtration all play a part in the cost of a commercial vacuum. A cheap inferior appliance could end up costing you money in the long run, therefore, I’d recommend striking the balance between affordability and performance.

Before choosing which one to buy, I’ll stress again that you should be clear about the type of cleaning you’ll require it to do. If you frequently clear away leaves and rubble, I’d recommended that you consider a unit which can convert from vacuum to blower.

In addition to this, collecting liquid substances can result in a stinking tank if it isn’t cleaned property and for this reason, a drain hose is a helpful feature to consider for easier drainage.

A regular high-performance vacuum cleaner will set you back around $200-$300, however when looking at a wet and dry vacuum for commercial use you should be paying anything up to about $500 or a bit more depending on the brand and usage requirements.

If your work site or workshop needs a bit of TLC, we’re here to help you find the best commercial industrial wet dry vacuum cleaners in 2019.

Industrial wet dry vacuums are manufactured with stronger motors,
to be hard-wearing and to pick up more mess than standard domestic vacuums. In this guide, I’ve put together some helpful tips and a shortlist of the top-performing commercial vacuum cleaners available right now.

When considering to buy a wet and dry vacuum cleaner, there are a few things that you need to be up to be familiar with before parting with your cash. Functionality and capacity vary between each model and in this case, it’s important to know the capabilities of your new machine if it contributes towards the upkeep of your business.

We’ll review a selection of 7 of the best industrial wet and dry vacuums to use on a worksite, workshop, building project, shop floors, offices spaces and any other demanding environments. I’ll highlight some important functions that can easily be overlooked and show you what to look out for.

When cleaning on a larger scale and when dealing with materials such as wood chippings, sawdust or wet substances it doesn’t make sense to try and use a standard vacuum cleaner (it will eventually breakdown). This is where a wet and dry vacuum cleaner comes in to take on all difficult cleaning tasks.

These appliances are designed for tough jobs in commercial scenarios. They are usually equipped with stronger motors than domestic vacuums but they might not be as convenient to use as a portable machine. Industrial vacuums are built to be long lasting, which is vital if it’s regularly used on robust jobs for long timespans.

Our shortlist of commercial wet and dry vacuums take into account suction power, the quality of materials, accessories provided, handling, the capacity of dry and wet debris and other practical features. Each of our chosen vacuums has a good performance record and positive ratings from users. If your business is in dire need of a robust vacuum cleaner then keep reading.

Things To Consider For Industrial Vacuums

If you’re thinking about buying a wet and dry vacuum for commercial usage it’s most likely to help you earn money, for example, a house cleaning business or it might be to clean up debris caused by work tools i.e. sanding or drilling. This type of mess is beyond the capabilities of a regular vacuum, therefore you need a machine with more power and capacity. Below, I’ve summed up some of the most important aspects to consider.

Although the machine cost is an important element it doesn’t necessarily guarantee good performance, but there is also the danger of buying too cheap and compromising the cleaning standard.

I would recommend looking at all of the features that are relevant for you and your business rather than basing your decision mainly on cost. This will ensure that you buy the best vacuum for your budget. Typically you can expect to pay between $100 – $350 for a good wet and dry vacuum.

How much does it weigh and how big is it?

Power and cost might be the first things you’ll typically look into but the size and heaviness of the machine are equally worth considering. It’s highly likely that you’ll be transporting your wet and dry vacuum between different locations. You might also need to load and unload it from your vehicle everyday and as a result, you’ll need a lightweight appliance with a smart design for easier handling.

Vacuum cleaners that are used for business purposes have to deliver stronger suction power. It will save you time and money to buy a unit that can suck up wet and dry debris at a consistently high rate. If your machine can cope in challenging scenarios without breaking a sweat then you’re onto a winner.

When sourcing your new wet and dry vacuum, powerful suction is key especially when sucking up liquid, as it’s heavier than dry mess. Your machine needs to get through demanding tasks rapidly so that it doesn’t cause delays that could cost your business.

How much dirt can your wet and dry vacuum pick up before it needs emptying? I’ve selected large capacity models that minimise the hassle of constant emptying and as a result, are time-saving. Consider buying a vacuum with at least 4 gallons capacity.

Cord and Hose Length

To get through jobs faster you need a machine with a long electric cable so that you can work quickly without worrying about switching plug sockets. A lengthy flexible hose also help to access hard to reach areas with ease, thus, making the task of cleaning a stress-free process.

As mentioned earlier, wet and dry vacuums need to be resilient to cope with the tough jobs placed in front of them. To begin with, these models are fitted with a protective layer that keeps water away from the electrics. The tanks on heavy-duty models are usually built from stainless steel for a longer life.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the recommended wet and dry vacuum cleaners that you can buy for commercial use in 2019.

1. Bissell Garage Pro Wall-Mounted Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner/Blower

At the top of our list is the Bissell Garage Pro wet & dry vacuum. This model is perfect for workshops and mechanics that want to clean their garages regularly. This is a wall-mounted unit and as a result, it wouldn’t be suitable for businesses that work in multiple locations. The Garage Pro is built with space-saving as a priority, you can hang it on the wall to give you maximum floor space, meaning that it doesn’t get in the way.

The hose is extra-long and measures 32ft so that you can conveniently reach all 4 corners of the room without hassle, it’s perfect for valeting car interiors, cleaning up spillages or picking up sawdust from workstations. The 4-gallon tank provides ample capacity for big cleans and is equipped with an indicator light to notify you when it’s full.

You will find a 12-amp motor under the hood which delivers powerful performance wherever it’s needed. This machine has been designed to deal with debris and liquids on an industrial level. The motor can be reversed into a blower to remove dust grains from workspaces and tools.

It comes with 7 multi-purpose attachments to simplify difficult tasks, especially when cleaning confined areas such as car interiors. The tools extend the Bissell Garage Pro’s abilities making it adaptable to manage a multitude of tasks.

There is an accessory bag to ensure that your tools are all stored in one place and never get lost. The ingenious wall-mounted machine is always prepared to get on with the job but doesn’t get in the way.

The motor noise is similar to the majority of shop vacs out there, it’s not the quietest machine and the noise level measures about 80 decibels which is equivalent to an alarm clock or a busy road.

The hose has a 1 1/2″ diameter which makes it more practical to use than a standard shop vac. It’s long enough to navigate large work areas and to get into all the nooks and crannies without issues. Perfect! At first, it feels a bit awkward (in a good way) to vacuum without physically touching or pulling along the machine, but you soon get used to it.

The suction power is on par with the best performing wet and dry vacuums and is sufficient for picking up debris left over after sanding or drilling. It extracts liquids at a rapid rate and is great for sucking up pools of water after car washes. Setting up the unit on your wall is straightforward and only requires installing a bracket to the wall, then slotting the unit onto it.

Benefits of the Bissell Garage Pro

  • The Wall mounted design frees up space.
  • The 12 Amp motor picks up liquid and dry mess rapidly and is practical for garages, workshops and vehicle interiors.
  • Can be transformed from vacuum to blower to eliminate dust and grains from tools and workstations.
  • There are a variety of tools provided to adapt the machine to most cleaning situations. An accessory bag is also provided for handy storage.
  • It picks up 4 gallons of dirt and as a result, requires less frequent emptying.
  • There’s a dual layer filter system to keep dirt where it belongs, inside the tank.

Overall, the Powr-Flite Wet and Dry Vacuum is a heavy-duty piece of kit that can operate for long periods of time and maintain a high level of suction power without kicking up a fuss. I specifically like the squeegee attachment which introduces a better way to recover water instead of attempting to do it with a wand and hose. If you’re after a hard-wearing commercial cleaner that costs less than $390 you won’t find a better unit than the Powr-Flite vacuum.

Powr-Flite features on our list again. They must be doing something right! The PF57 is a dual motor wet and dry vacuum built to take on the challenges of a testing environment. The 2–stage filter includes a long-lasting cloth filter bag which makes it impossible for dust to escape back into the atmosphere once caught.

This heavy-duty machine performs with an oomph of power and excels at removing water from floors. The dual-motor distributes suction power evenly and provides consistent performance for extended periods. If you’re looking for a wet and dry vacuum that can stand the test of time, the Powr-Flite PF57 is strongly recommended.

It outperforms shop vac machines and the suction power stops blockages building up inside the hose or wand. It vacuums faster and is more thorough than some of the alternatives that I’ve tested. The unit is hard-wearing and feels premium throughout. The Powr-Flite brand has given impressive results thus far, their appliances are manufactured to a commercial standard and you are aware of this from the moment you unbox and turn them on.

The only drawback with the PF57 is that it isn’t equipped with a drainage outlet which would make disposal easier and as a result, it can be arduous to tip out the water when the tank is full.

Benefits of the Powr-Flite PF57

  • Similar to its siblings this machine is equipped with a noise diffuser to lower the motor noise level.
  • The dual-motors work hand in hand to thoroughly clean up debris from workshops, building sites and other commercial spaces.

The Rubbermaid commercial wet and dry vacuum cleaner is suitable for heavy-duty cleaning on an industrial scale. The 12.5-gallon tank provides plenty of capacity for collecting huge amounts of dirt uninterrupted. The tank is sturdy and is split into 2 compartments for a seamless adjustment between cleaning dry and wet mess.

The unit is one of easiest wet and dry vacuums to handle thanks to the large wheels at the rear and rotating wheels at the front. You will also find a cord hook to store the power cable conveniently and a storage container for the attachments. I like that the machine is surrounded by a protective bumper to avoid damaging objects and scuffing of walls.

The Rubbermaid vacuum is perfect for professionals that need to regularly clean a combination of liquids and dry mess in one go. Changing between wet and dry is quick and only requires you to slide open a cover and change the hose to the appropriate tank. It only takes a few seconds to change over. An added bonus is that the machine operates quieter than it looks.

The unit sits on top of a cart with an integrated caddy to keep all of your tools within easy reach. The cart massively improves the manoeuvrability of the Rubbermaid cleaner. The cart is also necessary owing to the size and weight of the unit. The hose cleverly swivels, where it connects to the machine, to stop it from twisting

5. Karcher WD5/P Multi-Purpose Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner

Kärcher is a German family-owned company renowned for their high-quality appliances. Their wet and dry offering is the WD5/P which is equipped with a clever semi-automatic mechanism to clean the filters. This makes the unit highly convenient and speeds up cleaning times. The filter also allows you to change from wet to dry cleaning whilst on the move, you don’t need to stop.

It comes with a long 7.2 ft hose designed to minimise blockages and the best bit about this machine is the integrated power outlet for your power tools, which automatically starts and stops for better tool management. This machine is a must-have for professionals and workmen. There’s plenty of storage, on the machine, to keep attachments within easy reach.

The filtration system utilises a pleated cylinder filter that provides increased coverage than alternative models. Wider coverage improves the effectiveness of the filters particularly when capturing smaller dust grains. A vacuum cleaner with high quality filters, such as the Kärcher WD5/P, lasts much longer because its parts are guarded from dirt and dust.

How do you clean the filters? By simply pressing a button to activate the filter cleaning mechanism. Everything about the Kärcher vacuum is carefully crafted to simplify cleaning and make it a quicker experience whilst maintaining a high performance standard.

The suction power is simply remarkable. This machine is a beast on wheels. The 1800-watt motor provides best-in-class air flow which is supported by a glass filled nylon container that can cope with the additional air pressure compared to a plastic container. The adjustable suction levels gives you the convenience of enhancing the airflow to specific requirements when operating power tools.

Another thing in favour of the Kärcher wet and dry vacuum over its rivals is that it’s an affordable tool-activated commercial machine costing just $192. Usually, tool-activated vacuums cost a lot more money than this. The motor is reasonably quiet for an industrial cleaning machine.

Helpful tip: Be sure to check the wattage of your power tools before connecting them to the Kärcher as its rated at 6 amps on the tool activation feature. This should be adequate for drills and Sanders but certain tools such as saws might require more power above the 6 amp threshold and as a result, might end up damaging the Kärcher vacuum cleaner. Always check the user guide for guidance before use.

Benefits of the Kärcher WD5/P

  • This unit is designed with convenience as a priority. It cleans thoroughly and faster.
  • The 1800-watt motor matches up to the best of them and handles commercial cleaning efficiently.
  • I like the automated filter cleaning system as it saves time and effort.
  • The integrated power tool activation outlet is an added bonus usually found on vacuums that cost twice the price. It automatically starts and stops on demand.
  • There are various attachments included in the box such as a hand grip nozzle, floor nozzle, a crevice tool, hose, extension wand and bag to keep all of your accessories.
  • I saved one of the best features for last. The Kärcher can convert from vacuum to blower, therefore, you can use it to clear up leaves and debris from unwanted areas.

How to Choose a Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner in 2019

Searching the market for a vac that handles solids and liquids? We’ll show you how to choose a wet and dry vacuum cleaner in 2019. If you’re not sure how to find the best one or what features you need to look out for then you’ve come to the right place. Sit back and continue reading our guide which will take you through everything you need to know.

The most important thing to consider when looking for a new wet & dry vacuum is your requirements. Are you a workman that needs an appliance to clean up after you’re done sanding, drilling or sawing? Do you need a domestic device that can unblock sinks and dry up wet floors or leaks? How many gallons of water does the machine need to extract in one go?

It’s important to understand your new machine’s capabilities and performance levels so that you can get the most out of it. I’ll highlight the main features to take into account throughout this article so that by the end of it you’ll be well-versed at what to expect when buying a new wet and dry vacuum cleaner.

What is your budget and usage requirements?

In this section, we’ll delve a bit deeper into your usage requirements. The standout feature of a wet and dry vacuum is its ability to suck up water on in addition to vacuum cleaning. A standard vac is not capable of this as the water would short-circuit the electrical components whereas a wet/dry vacuum has a layer of protection that keeps the electrics completely dry and separate to the collected water.

If you need a machine that can occasionally pick up liquids as well as perform regular household duties then a smaller unit, under 4 gallons, would be adequate. For those that need a machine that can deal with mess on an industrial level and one with a bigger tank size then you’ll need a unit that can collect a minimum of 6 gallons and a 3 peak motor. We’ve shortlisted the best wet and dry vacuums available in 2019, simply follow the link below to see our top recommendations.

Affordability is also an important factor when deciding what type of machine to get. The majority of our recommended wet vacuums cost less than $200, and most of them are priced substantially less than this, however, they might be a few compromises with cheaper models. For instance, budget models are usually equipped with a less powerful motor and a lower capacity.

Do You Need a Handheld or Full-Sized Model?

It’s also possible to buy a handheld wet vacuum but these are more suited for smaller tasks like spot cleaning spilt liquids and would not be able to cope with larger areas or commercial cleaning.

The models that we’ve discussed thus far are full-sized robust cleaners that can perform the most demanding type of cleaning such as cleaning up sawdust, wood chippings, picking up snow and so on. A handheld wet vacuum cleaner has considerably less suction power and water-holding capacity but still has its uses and advantages.

For starters, a handheld unit is cheaper than a full-sized wet & dry vac and is easier to store in homes with limited storage. They are handy for fast clean-ups that don’t require a large machine to be assembled just for a small spill.

What about Suction Power?

If there’s one function that sets apart the wet and dry vacuum cleaner from other types of vacuums is their industrial-level suction power. These mahcines are incredibly powerful and as a result, they can extract large volumes of water on demand.

Wet and dry brands such as Craftsman, Workshop, Shop Vac and Vacmaster are different to standard upright or canister vacuums because their suction power far exceeds them. This level of suction is required to clean areas such as workshops, construction sites, debris caused by power tools. Could you imagine trying to do all of this with your domestic vacuum? Not a chance. If you’re after a powerful long-lasting and virtually indestructible vacuum cleaner, a wet and dry unit is the perfect choice.

But even with this high level of suction there’s still some big differences in suction levels between wet and dry models. High power wattage doesn’t necessarily equate to higher suction, but there’s generally a correlation with the two.

Always check the suction power level before buying to get an idea of the tasks your desired model can carry out so that you know it won’t struggle with the demands placed upon it.

Is it possible to have too much such suction power? Yes, there is! If you decided to clean your house carpets with a powerful industrial wet/dry vacuum, the suction power would probably lift the carpet and keep the nozzle or cleaner head stuck to it, thus making it harder to push back and forth.

Length & Diameter of the Hose

The diameter of the hose will determine the amount of debris or liquids that the vacuum can pick up and the rate at which it does this. The large proportion of wet and dry vacuums are equipped with large-diameter hoses but it’s a good idea to assess this before purchasing.

The hose length is equally as important because it determines the cleaning range of your unit, a longer length hose ensures that areas that are difficult to reach can be accessed easier. In certain cases a longer hose can result in lower suction power.

Wet and Dry Tank Capacity

A machine with a larger water gallon capacity is more convenient and time-saving. Bigger capacities are a must-have on work sites to ensure longer operating times, as small units would need to be emptied frequently.

Another thing to look out for is the listed capacities for wet and dry vacuums, these could be different for the dry capacity compared to the wet capacity. Note that liquid weighs more than dry debris, therefore a larger volume of liquid would be more difficult to empty out of the tank.

Wherever possible, choose a wet and dry vacuum with high-grade filters particularly if you suffer from airborne allergic reactions. If you’re after a model for worksites that work with hazardous substances, you’ll require a machine with filtration designed to cope with this.

Features To Consider When Buying A Wet & Dry Vacuum

  • Accessories– Most wet and dry vacuums come with standard attachments such as a crevice tool, wet nozzle and an extension wand. If you need accessories for specific tasks then make sure you check what’s included in the box before purchasing. Preferably, get a model with built-in storage.
  • Length of the power cable– a longer cable is better for cleaning bigger rooms and reduces the need to constantly change plug sockets.
  • How much does it weigh?– The heaviness of a vacuum should be considered. Don’t underestimate how challenging a heavy appliance is to move around. You don’t want to be stuck with a machine that adds time to your cleaning and is a burden to manoeuvre.
  • An outlet for Power Tools- This feature is not included on all wet and dry vacuums but is extremely useful for those that work with power tools. You can connect your work tools to the outlet and the machine will automatically extract any resulting dirt when required.

Recommended Reading: Best Wet & Dry Vacuum Cleaner for 2019

  • Noise level– Certain wet and dry machines are noticeably louder than others as a result of their strong motors. I’d recommend buying a unit that is fitted with a noise diffuser to minimise its loudness.
  • Water Drainage- Some units are equipped with a drainage valve to empty large volumes of water, thus eliminating the need to lift the tank and tip out the liquid.
  • Hose connection– in some cases the material that connects the hose to the tank can be of poor quality. If you want a hard-wearing connection, search for a model with a screw-on or lock connection.
  • After-care– The majority of wet and dry cleaners include a limited warranty or guaranty. It’s a good idea to check if this also covers labour and parts.

Wet & Dry Vacuum Cleaner FAQs

Can Wet and Dry Vacuums Clean My Carpets?

Carpet Shampooing machines warm up a tank of water and disperse it onto the carpet. The water is mixed together with a cleaning fluid (specifically designed for carpets), which then dislodges dirt with the help of scrubbing brushes found at the base of the unit.

The carpet washer then sucks up the dirt and dirty water into a separate tank leaving a fresh-looking carpet once done. Some carpets cleaners might wash in a slightly a different way, but overall this is how they work.

Wet and Dry Vacuums are not to be confused with carpet cleaners. They cannot do the above. They don’t come with a dual tank for clean and dirty water and they cannot disperse shampoo onto carpets. You can vacuum liquids efficiently from wet floors with a wet and dry vacuum but if you want to wash your carpet you’ll require a carpet cleaner.

What Sets Them Apart From Other Vacuums?

For starters, wet & dry vacuum cleaners are built to cope with demanding jobs that a regular vacuum simply couldn’t withstand and for this reason, they are often used for workshops, building sites, shop floors, outdoor tasks such as gardens, removing snow, vacuuming dirt from decking and cleaning vans/trucks. To deal with such challenging environments they have to be heavy-duty and stronger than other machines.

One of the most important factors of these type of appliances is their ability to clean both dry debris and liquid substances. To do this the electric components need to protected from the water. There is a special insulation that separates the electrics from liquids, thus keeping the unit and the user safe from short-circuiting or electrocution respectively.

Within the machines, most units will be designed with a mechanism that separates solids from water. You will need to adapt the machine, by changing its filters, to perform specific tasks but this also varies between models.

You can also reverse the motor from suction to blower and as a result it can be used to shift leaves or blow away dust from your tools. Some models will come with a dedicated detachable blower.

You’ve come to the end of our guide and I hope that we’ve made it clearer on how to choose a wet and dry vacuum in 2019. These units are the most robust appliances available for cleaning. They can work through gruelling tasks that would soon break a standard vacuum cleaner, and their capabilities to extract water from floors and unblock sinks increases their usefulness.

Before settling on a wet and dry machine, begin by considering what you need it for and what areas it will be required to clean up. is it needed for domestic or industrial use or maybe both? Also, check how far your budget can stretch, sometimes the price difference between an average and outstanding vacuum can be a few bucks.

Overall, the suction performance is normally the deciding factor when choosing your ideal model. There are a large number of wet & dry vacuum cleaners that deliver great suction power, therefore providing spotless results.

Our List of the Best Domestic Appliances

The Best Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaners for 2019

Looking for the best wet dry vacuum cleaners for 2019? This is the best guide to help you find the perfect appliance for those tough jobs that your regular vacuum cannot do. I’ve put together a list of the best resilient vacuum cleaners that can deal with fluids and dry mess while being budget-friendly.

Wet and dry vacuum cleaners (or shop vacs) are appliances used to vacuum spillages and solid debris from multiple surfaces (indoors and outdoors) including carpets, hard floors, upholstery, decking, concrete and so on. These machines can be used in tough environments such as building sites, warehouses or offices but can equally be used for domestic cleaning.

There are various types of wet and dry vacuum cleaners and as a result, finding the best machine for your requirements can prove to be difficult. Your ideal cleaner should have the capacity to easily handle the area you intend it to clean and should come with tools to assist with tackling different tasks.

Although a wet and dry vacuum can clean liquids as well as dry dirt we need to ensure that it can do so without struggling, to guarantee a long life. In most cases, you should also be able to use the machine indoors and outside unlike a regular vacuum cleaner. Our list of wet and dry vacuum cleaners have been selected for their durability and powerful performance.

If you need a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner that can be used for multiple applications and is stronger than a standard vac then you are on the right path, a wet and dry unit is a great choice, but which one should you buy? Are there models that you should steer clear of? We’ll guide you through all of this. Read on.

Reasons to Buy a Wet and Dry Vacuum

There are more advantages to using a wet and dry vacuum over a normal machine and the main benefit is the ability to suck up fluids such as water leaks, coffee spillages and so on. They are also built like tanks to cope with tougher cleaning and outdoor usage and will vacuum everything from sawdust to snow.

Some units can even reverse the suction so that the machine can be used as a blower. This can be handy for shifting items such as leaves to specific areas for easier disposal, or to clear blockages in the hose.

Power tools such as sanders can be attached to some machines through an outlet so that you can perform specific tasks such as vacuuming sawdust and chippings. Once your power tool is connected to the outlet, your wet and dry vacuum will automatically switch on and off as and when it’s required. Not all models come with this feature, but if you use power tools regularly this is a very helpful function.

How are wet vacuum cleaners designed to work with liquids?

A waterproof membrane is integrated into the machine. This membrane collects liquids and shields them against electrical components so that the two never come in contact with each other and as a result, you can safely use your machine to collect water and other fluids provided that it’s in the right mode.

If you attempted to suck up a large volume of liquid with a normal vacuum cleaner it would probably short circuit because there is no barrier in place to protect the electrical components from water.

Below are some of the tasks you can carry out with a wet and dry cleaner:

  • Vacuuming spillages.
  • Clearing up debris from work sites.
  • Unblocking a sink.
  • Sucking up wood chippings and sawdust produced by power tools.
  • Cleaning dirty work vans and car interiors.
  • Extracting moisture from carpets that have just been washed.
  • Drying up wet hard floors.
  • Vacuuming garages, workshops and areas that accrue large amounts of dirt.

There are a few drawbacks to wet and dry vacuum cleaners. Regular upright and canister vacuum cleaners are usually equipped with better filtration to catch airborne allergens and dust floating in the air. This feature is handy as it helps to clean the air whilst operating a vacuum cleaner but is especially important for those that are prone to asthma and dust allergies. But I’ve found and included wet & dry vacuums with HEPA filters on the list below.

Bear in mind that a wet vacuum cleaner should not be confused with a carpet shampooer. Wet and dry vacuums can draw out water from the carpet but they don’t wash it. It’s possible to find a machine that can extract water and also wash the floor (we’ll point these out to you further down). If you need a wet/dry vacuum specifically for removing waste from ponds with minimum effort then you should buy a pond vacuum.

Without further ado, here is our shortlist of wet / dry vacuum cleaners for 2019.

At the top of our list is the leading wet/dry vacuum designed by WORKSHOP. It’s equipped with a comfortable handle for better manoeuvrability and big wheels that help to easily transport it between areas. Heavy-duty cleaning is quick and simple. It comes with an extra-long bendable hose to clean larger areas and it runs quieter than some smaller vacuums.

This model is designed with a big rocker switch which has the benefits of better control during intensive cleaning sessions. The WORKSHOP wet/dry cleaner has heaps of power and is tough enough to pick up gravel outdoors. It also comes with accessories to clean vans and cars that clean to an exceptionally high standard. The handle lets you control the powerful suction easier when the nozzle “sticks” to the seat fabric or the carpet, from the sheer suction force.

Overall, the WORKSHOP vacuum cleaner is an outstanding piece of kit for demanding environments. The machine is positioned at a good height to ease the burden of bending over during usage- this will save you from back pain even when cleaning for long periods. The power cord can occasionally get stuck between the wheels, so it’s worth keeping a good amount of clearance during usage.

  • The extra-long flexible hose makes it easier to reach and clean more areas.
  • A 5-year warranty comes as standard with the WORKSHOP wet/ dry vacuum cleaner.
  • The sleeves are designed to house all the attachments required for various tasks.
  • This model is ASTM tested and certified.

The Craftsman 12004 wet and dry vacuum is equipped with a tank that can collect up to 6 gallons of liquids and a powerful 3 peak motor that ensure a fast and hassle-free cleaning experience. This model comes with a long power cable (10 feet) for further reach and a hose measuring 7 feet. The casters can rotate 360 degrees so that the machine can move in any direction.

This machine will pick up dirt that other vacuum cleaners would struggle with such as hay, gravel, grit, pet litter and other types of stubborn dirt. Performance is impressive especially when picking up strands of hay which even the best performing brands (Dyson / Hoover) would find difficult to deal with. The suction on the Craftsman 12004 is so strong that it actually lifts the carpet as you run the cleaner head across it.

The problem with tough dirt such as sawdust and hay is that it can easily clog up a regular vacuum cleaner and as a result, you would need to constantly take the machine apart and unblock the filters. A wet and dry vacuum cleaner like the Craftsman can cope with these challenges and leave you with a spotlessly clean room.

  • This model delivers robust wet and dry cleaning and collects up to 6 gallons of liquid and it can also be used as a blower.
  • The Craftsman vacuum comes with an 8-piece accessory kit that broadens the range of jobs it can perform.
  • The power switch is conveniently located in an area that is easy to reach for better control.

There’s a good range of cleaning attachments provided with the unit including a 5-feet hose, clamp ring, a utility nozzle and floor brush to tackle all types of jobs. It produces 4.5 peak power which is ample for arduous cleaning tasks.

This Stanley vacuum gives you 3 big benefits- abundant suction power, quiet operation and portability. The clever design means that you don’t experience the burden of heaving a large cumbersome machine and suitably places the machine for fast convenient cleaning.

The hose has a reduced diameter that works in your favour as it concentrates the suction power. You will find ample storage for the accessories, a unit that’s lightweight to move around and an ergonomic handle for easier control.

The tank is longer rather than wider and as a result, it improves the handling and delivers a better cleaning experience whilst still getting all the benefits of a full sized vacuum cleaner. This unit sits on top of 4 swivel casters for stress-free multi-directional movement. The 10-foot power cable gives a greater cleaning range and can be wrapped around the machine for convenient storage.

The vacuum comes with enough accessories to help you get on with the task at hand. It’s a sturdy machine and a joy to handle thanks to its compact measurements. You won’t struggle to lift the Vacmaster around if needed.

The hose is screwed into the base instead of clipping it in, therefore providing extra secureness when you’re pulling the unit. This vac will deal with the toughest dirt and also finer particles such as pollen without clogging up the machine or leaving behind trace of residue. The dirt collection bag is purely for dry debris then you simply remove it whenever you need the machine to suck up liquids.

A slight drawback with the Vacmaster is that the machine shuts off, to empty out the liquid before it reaches the stated 4 Gallons but as a result of this, the emptying process is easier with less liquid in the tank.

The design of the Vacmaster vacuum is well considered and built to be user-friendly. It runs at a lower noise level than the competition, it’s equipped with an integrated cord reel, the buttons are large and easy to switch, and the machine moves effortlessly whilst you pull it around. The machine can cope with clearing up problematic dirt on various surfaces from hard floors to carpets and can also be used domestically.

  • The 7-foot hose and 18-foot power cord extend the cleaning range considerably, therefore, allowing you to clean bigger rooms.
  • Reliable performance on a commercial scale thanks to the two-stage industrial motor.
  • The agile wheels allow this machine to go wherever you take it.

Performance is consistent both indoors on flooring and outdoors whilst using the blower to clear out leaves. A few users gave this machine negative reviews about the wheels coming off but I suspect that the machine has not been set up properly and below are my reasons why.

Before operating the machine, the casters need to slot beneath the chassis. The manufacturer provides a set of screws to fasten the casters into position. Users complaining about the wheels dropping off will need to ensure that the screws are fastened securely into the chassis.

What I like most about the Vacmaster 12 gallon wet and dry vacuum cleaner is its affordability. This machine will cost you less than $90 and is perfect for anyone that is undertaking extensive renovations but doesn’t want to spend a lot of money on an industrial-level cleaner. It’s perfect for cleaning workshops, commercial units, offices and stores.

The Vacmaster machine is incredibly tough, it’s easy to operate and takes seconds to empty out dirt and liquids. The motor is one of the quietest thanks to the noise diffuser. You can move it around with minimum effort (as long as you install the casters properly).

The 2-stage motor is ideal for heavy-duty usage and the entire unit has HEPA grade filtration to trap allergens circulating in the air. The blower produces 240 MPH of wind speed and comes with an adapter to attach the wand for greater coverage. How Does Bissell Proheat 2x Revolution Pet Clean Carpets?

bissell proheat 2x revolution pet upright carpet cleanerProheat Pet is an upright cleaner that uses powered brushes to apply shampoo and water directly into the carpet pile. Dirty water is simultaneously lifted up and collected in a separate tank.

The machine is equipped with a detachable hose that can be interchanged between the handle and the front of the unit to use easier when cleaning upholstery and stairs. A tough stain tool is supplied as standard to clean stubborn stains.

The Bissell machine houses 2 separate tanks, one for carpet shampoo and clean water and the other to collect dirty water.

Not all carpet cleaners are fitted with 2 standalone tanks, I like the added convenience for emptying and refilling water separately

The machine weighs 8KG whens it’s empty and 12KG when filled up and ready to clean your carpets. You’ll be pleased to know that there are rival machines that weigh an additional 5KG than this Bissell carpet cleaner, so it’s light compared to the competition.

The Bissell Proheat 2x Revolution Pet is a mid-range carpet cleaner but it matches up to premium machines that cost a lot more. In particular, the carpet drying performance was one of the best I’ve seen. The machine extracted water from the carpets just as good as the best-rated carpet cleaners and made carpet washing a lot easier.

Carpet cleaners struggle to remove stains as good as spot cleaners. In its favour, Bissell Proheat 2x Revolution Pet did a better task at removing stains than other carpet cleaners. Bissell will remove more food stains, coffee or tea stains and red wine stains than its rivals.

Bissell ProHeat 2x Revolution Pet Drawbacks

A slight drawback is that the Bissell ProHeat does not come with a hard-floor attachment and the machine noise is a bit higher than other carpet cleaners. The noise isn’t a big worry because carpet cleaning is a task that is carried out a few times a year.

What else should you know about Bissell ProHeat?

Carpet cleaners are known to be cumbersome and difficult to handle, but the Bissell ProHeat was really easy to operate and handle. Shampoo application was a smooth process and the detergent was evenly distributed.

Overall Product Rating

Bissell Proheat 2x Revolution Pet is a carpet cleaner with strong ratings from most of its owners and has been well received.

The machine scores a respectable 7.8 / 10

Bissell Proheat 2x Revolution Pet Performance Ratings

Carpet washing 6 / 10

This rating measures how well the machine performs its primary function of cleaning the carpet with shampoo and water. A rating of 10 stars means carpets are cleaned to the highest standard. A rating of 1 star means the machine fell far below cleaning expectations when compared to similar carpet cleaners.

Drying carpets 10 / 10

The rating measures water extraction from carpets during the cleaning process and the length of time it takes for the carpets to dry once washing is complete. A rating of 10 stars means the machine can extract enough water from the carpet for you to walk on it 2 hours after cleaning is complete.

A rating of 1 star means that water extraction was less than adequate- your carpets will remain damp a lot longer.

Removing Stains 8 / 10

Tough stains such as food and red wine are challenging to remove at the best of times. Most carpet cleaners will have difficulty removing such stains, but a carpet cleaner with a higher rating will significantly lessen the stain mark. Machines with lower ratings will have little impact on stain removal.

Manoeuvring into corners and walls 8 / 10

The most effective carpet cleaner is one that can clean to the edge of carpets and into the corners. A carpet cleaner with 10 stars will get as close to the wall as possible to give your carpet an even clean. A lower rated machine will be 1 or 2 centimetres away from the wall leaving the edges of your carpet dirty and untouched. Thankfully the Bissell ProHeat has a great design that gets as close to the edge as possible.

Machine Cleaning Noise 5 / 10

Machine noise isn’t a big concern because carpet cleaning is done less frequently than regular vacuuming however, it’s still good to know how the Bissell scored in the noise test. Noise from a carpet cleaner with 10 stars will be much less than that on a lower rated machine. You should be able to hear or hold a conversation with a higher rated machine, whereas it would be harder to hear anything or talk over the noise of a 1 star machine.

How Easy Is It To Use 8 / 10

Lower-rated carpet cleaners are difficult to handle, heavier and more cumbersome compared to higher rated machines. I also look at things like preparing the water and detergent, emptying out dirty water, cable length to reach the furthest parts of the room. It’s much easier to use a carpet cleaner that scores between 8-10 stars.
