Why we think a cordless vacuum would do great for cleaning the stairs is easy to understand. Cordless vacs are easy to maneuver; you won’t have to worry about long power cords getting tangled as you do your household chore. These devices are compact and light, too, which means it’s easy to carry even up the staircase.
Keeping the stairs clean at all times can be a daunting task, but not if you’re using the right tool that will make your life easier. Thus, if you have stairs and you’ve been stressing about keeping it spotless 24/7, we can help you lighten things up. In this section, we’ll share a list of the best cordless vacuum cleaners for stairs 2021 – and a quick guide on how you will choose the right product.
Quick Guide on Getting the Right Vacuum Cleaner for Stairs
Not all stairs are the same just as not all customers have the same needs. That’s why it’s important to be a little careful when getting a vacuum cleaner for your stairs. You don’t want to end up having the wrong product, and eventually, waste time and energy.
For all the devices and products that we purchase, we’d always prefer to make the right investment. So, if you want to get the best vacuum cleaner for your stairs and your needs, below is a quick guide on what features to consider on your purchase.
Size
The size of the vacuum cleaner matters on your purchase as it must complement the width of your stairs’ steps. You can find vacuums of different sizes, but most cordless models are compact and handy. Having a small unit means slower cleaning speed, too. Meaning, you also have to consider it.
The smaller the model, the smaller the area it can clean at a time. If you want to complete your vacuuming tasks faster, you must get bigger vacuum cleaners. However, bigger models might have a difficult time reaching the nooks of your stairs. So when choosing the best size of the vacuum you’d want to get, you should weigh out these factors.
Weight
The weight of the vacuum cleaner will affect how comfy it is to use. Especially if it’s cordless and you’re going to use it for stairs, you’ll probably be going to carry it for some time. Meaning, if you don’t want to strain your arms while using the vacuum cleaner, opt for a lighter model. Although it’s not always the case, lighter models may have weaker machines. Thus, the best product to get if you’re looking for a vacuum cleaner for stairs is a lightweight model with powerful suction.
Type
There are different types of vacuum cleaners that you can choose from in the market. You will find upright models, canister, handheld, corded or cordless products, and more. If you’re specifically looking for a vacuum cleaner that can work well for your stairs, something that’s light and easy to carry can be the best choice. Getting a cordless model could be a good move, too.
Cord-free vacuum cleaners will be easier to handle as you won’t have to worry if the cord is long enough to reach the top of the stairs. The type of vacuum cleaner you want to get depends on the dimensions of your stairs, too. If you have narrow-spaced stairs like a spiral staircase, you might want to opt for smaller, handheld vacs with no cords.
The catch about handheld vacuum cleaners, however, is typically they have weaker machines and therefore weaker suction power than the bigger models like upright vacuums.
Ease of Use
Some models are more high-tech than other vacuum cleaners. Advanced models are not always better, though. Some people prefer to use vacuum cleaners that are plug-and-play, eliminating the need for fancy set-ups. Easy dirt disposal is also to consider as part of this factor.
Some vacuum cleaners offer easy to empty dirt cups. With just one press of a button, the collected dirt will go straight to the trash, which is a good example of a vacuum cleaner that’s easy to use. This feature allows you to leave your hands clean without needing to touch the collected dirt when emptying the dirt container. Models that are simple to set-up can be a good choice if ease of use is one of the main factors you want to consider when buying a vacuum cleaner.
Battery
For cordless vacuum cleaners, battery life is one of the most crucial features to check on your purchase. Clearly, you’d want a model with long-lasting battery life. Especially if you’re going to use it for stairs, you might want to steer away from models that specialize in spot-cleaning.
These units typically have a short battery span but the suction power could be stronger than vacuum cleaners that run longer. Always check the specifications of the vacuum cleaner’s battery.
You will usually see lithium-ion batteries among cordless vacs as this type of power source typically offers longer life and great durability. Also check the charging time the model requires, as this factor varies among vacuum cleaners, too. Some models charge fast, while others take slower. Of course, you’d want a vacuum cleaner that has a shorter charging time, so you can use the product again quickly if it runs of out power in the middle of your task.
Suction Power
Suction power is probably one of the most crucial factors to consider when you get a vacuum cleaner, if not the most important. The greater suction power, the more efficient the vacuum cleaner is. Of course, added accessories like attachment tools will add to the efficiency of the model for cleaning and sucking up dirt.
However, suction power still is the major factor that will determine the quality of cleaning the product can provide.
With powerful suction, the faster you can complete your task. Sometimes, the quality of the machine and the power source are the major contributors that affect the suction power of a vacuum cleaner. You must also be aware of the consistency of the model’s suction power. Some vacuum cleaners tend to have inconsistent suction power in the middle of your cleaning.
Some technologies assure the consistency of the product’s suction power. You can read about this kind of information from the details provided by the manufacturer or by looking around the comment section.
Attachments
Most vacuum cleaners come with attachment tools. These accessories make the product more efficient in cleaning. Usually, you will find a crevice tool, a brush tool, a multi-purpose tool, and more inside the box together with the unit. If you have carpeted stairs, better look for an attachment tool that works well on such surfaces.
For carpets, a brush tool usually works best in getting rid and sucking up dirt and hair. For the corners and nooks of your stairs, you may want to look for a crevice tool that can reach hard-to-clean areas. Depending on your needs are the attachment tools you should look for when getting a vacuum cleaner.
7 Best Cordless Vacuum Cleaners for Stairs
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the number of options for a vacuum cleaner in the market. But now that you’ve read about the features to check when getting the best model for stairs, perhaps it’s easier for you to pick the best vacuum for your needs. We’re even funneling down your choices with these best cordless vacuum cleaners that work great on stairs.
These products differ in features, cost, and drawbacks, you can pick the one that most suits your budget, purpose, and the type of stairs you have at home.

The Holife handheld vacuum cleaner is almost the perfect choice for a stairs cleaner. It has a strong suction power, it’s lightweight, and lasts long. The Holife model offers about 30 minutes of battery life in every session, which is more than decent if you’re going to use it to clean the stairs. Holife highlights its powerful suction of 6KPA as you can’t easily see it elsewhere. However, the powerful suction doesn’t equally mean it works great on all surface types. I am need of cordless vacuum for on the go in my big truck. I have used the black and decker cordless vacuum but did not do the job well enough and made my allergies worse. Taught about buying the cordless Dyson for on the go, have read many reviews where this is an excellent vacuum for use in cars, RVs, or in my case big truck. Thanks for sharing these cordless vacuums with me and will be purchasing the Dyson.
Hi Jannette!
The Dyson V6 Trigger is powerful and versatile to use indoors as well as vehicle interiors thanks to the great range of accessories that it comes with. Dyson vacuums are also highly reliable, long-lasting and low maintenance. Great choice!
Krisan
Hey,
I was just looking to find the best vacuum for my stairs which are carpet. I have cats and so their hair seems to get everywhere. I currently have a Dyson v8 Absolute which is on it’s last legs so I am in need of a replacement. I never even knew so many different vacuums existed and am thinking of purchasing the Bissel 1782. Thank you for doing the research!
Robert

Funny enough, I don’t even have stairs in my home. I live in a small Atlanta apartment and need something other than a large, clunky vacuum with wires to get my space clean. Handheld stair vacuums seem like just the thing! After looking over your list, I feel as though the Holife Handheld is the most ideal for my situation. The long run time is just enough, I believe, to get around the apartment. I also appreciate the short charge time and all of the attachments. I’m sure we’d miss them on other models. I saw that the filters are washable, but how expensive are they and where would I purchase them?
Hello Maria!
My handheld vacuum is the most used appliance in our house. It’s so much better than a clunky corded vacuum. The Holife Handheld is a great affordable gadget with a good battery running time of 30 minutes.
It’s lightweight and provides plenty of powerful suction to clean your small apartment. The filters are very easy to wash and if you need to buy spare filters you can purchase them here.
regards
Krisan
Now this is a good idea, Cordless vacs, We ahve one in our house which is great for cleaning the stairs and hard to reach places
Do you use one yourself?
If so which one do you use and is it documented on this blog?
Certainly when compared to Cord Vacs, then these are way better
Would they be able to be used in Cars, as it doesn’t say and the one we have though for the house we can use in and on the car
I notice one of the Pros is a 20 minute run time, which is not long and I guess that could be seen as a con by some
Overall though a very detailed post
Hello Dave!
Yes, I’ve used several cordless vacuums, namely the Dyson V6 Trigger, Bissell 1782 and Black + Decker CHV1410L. I’ve used all 3 models to clean my car interior. Its so much easier to clean small spaces with a cordless vacuum.
The biggest advantage of a cordless vacuum over a corded one is the ease of accessibility. You can place the unit close to high-traffic areas such as the kitchen so that it always readily available.
You’d be surprised how many rooms you can clean in 20 mins. I can vacuum the whole house including stairs in that time 🙂
Kind regards
Krisan
